Ways To Lessen The Concentration Of Acid In Your Mouth

The acid in your mouth can directly impact the amount of tooth decay that you incur. Acid demineralizes tooth enamel which promotes the development of dental caries. Here are a few ways to lessen the concentration of decay-promoting acid in your mouth:

Control Oral Bacteria

Acid concentrations increase as the number of oral bacteria increases.

Oral bacteria consume carbohydrates from the food and drink that you ingest and then release acid as a byproduct of their digestive process. Thus, if you are able to control the bacteria in your mouth, you can lessen the amount of acid in your mouth. Here are a couple of ways to do this:

Spice up your dental hygiene routine.

Spices, such as cinnamon and turmeric, have anti-bacterial properties. You can reap the benefits by adding them to your food or drink. However, you can also make homemade toothpaste by adding water to the spices and brushing with the mixture. Still, you should be careful when using cinnamon alone, since the spice can be irritating to sensitive oral tissues.

Cinnamon can also be introduced by chewing cinnamon-flavored gum, which studies show is antimicrobial even if the gum is sugared.  

In addition, research indicates that turmeric mouthwash is as effective as chlorhexidine mouth rinse. It can be made by sprinkling a bit of turmeric in a cup of water and rinsing as you would with traditional mouthwash.

Chew gum sweetened with xylitol

Xylitol is a natural sweetener that is anti-microbial. Xylitol-sweetened gum kills the oral bacteria in your mouth as you chew.

Stop Drinking Soda

Even if soda does not contain sugar, it is still highly acidic. Sodas, such as cola, can be as corrosive as battery acid. In fact, one study indicates that colas are about 10 times as erosive as fruit juice during the first three minutes of ingestion.

Soda can be replaced with protective drinks, such as black tea. Black tea has been shown to have anti-bacterial properties that lessen the amount of oral bacteria, such as Streptococcus mutans. You can realize the benefits of the tea by drinking three or four cups daily.

Although there are multiple ways to combat decay-causing acid in your mouth, you should never neglect approved methods, such as brushing and flossing.
